Thin plate up to about 20 mm is laser cut cleanly with nitrogen assist; plasma handles thicker plate faster but leaves a heat-affected zone; waterjet cuts any thickness without heat and is used for duplex, clad and precision parts.

Stainless work-hardens quickly, so shearing and punching need more force than carbon steel and sharp tooling. Bending requires larger radii than carbon steel and allowance for springback, which is higher in duplex and ferritic grades.

Use dedicated tooling or protective film to avoid carbon steel contamination, which shows up later as rust spots on an otherwise sound stainless surface.
